SLAB CITY & SALVATION MOUNTAIN

What it's like to visit Slab City, the last "free" place in America. I've been wanting to go to Slab City for the past three years, but despite all the other places I've traveled to I was a little hesitant to go. Well I finally made the jump and went for it, and even though it was a little unsettling, I'm so glad I did!

Definitely in the middle of nowhere, Salvation Mountain is just off the Salton Sea in California.

Created by Leonard Knight over the past 28 years, Salvation Mountain is a man-made mountain.

The mountain is covered in literally hundreds of thousands of gallons of latex paint.

Paint cans can be seen around the structure.

Leonard's goal was to spread a message of love.

Around the mountain are lots of colorful cars with painted Bible verses on them.

The mountain is made of adobe bricks, tires and windows, automobile parts, and of course paint.

If you drive past Salvation Mountain, you enter Slab City.

Called "The Last Free Place in America," Slab City is considered to be a lawless land.

The community of Slab City basically consists of squatters, and the land it technically owned by the state of CA.

But there a few public establishments like the Church of Enlightenment and a Library.

Past Slab City is East Jesus, an art commune with installations made of repurposed garbage.

I mostly took photos from my car, but this area is a place I'd like to come back and explore more.

I'd definitely pull over again for this! If you do choose to visit Slab City, please be careful, don't go by yourself, and be aware of your surroundings.
