Let's talk about the art of detail shots. Who doesn't love a good ring shot? But there's obviously much more to wedding detail photography. Here's your go-to guide to wedding detail photography and assembling your wedding details box.

From the delicate lace on the wedding dress to the custom cuff links, every detail has been carefully considered and tells a unique story of your special day. Amidst the whirlwind of emotions and tight timeline, it's easy to miss some of these small, yet meaningful details you've invested thought into. After I arrive at your venue and greet you both, the first photos I take will be the detail shots.

Here's a guide of what you can include (some things you may not have thought of!) in your detail shots and some special tips I have!

TIP #1: PUT TOGETHER A BOX OR BAG WITH ALL YOUR DETAIL ITEMS.

This helps keep everything together and ensures that no special item is accidentally forgotten. It also saves time the day of from searching for missing items. This means more time for photos!

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR DETAIL BOX:

Here is a list of what items you can include in your details box! By no means feel obligated to include everything, this is just to get you thinking, include the items that are important to you.

BRIDE:

  • All three rings (both wedding bands and engagement ring)

  • Dress

  • A nice hanger for your dress

  • Veil / Hair pieces

  • Shoes

  • Additional jewelry (earrings, rings, necklace, bracelet)

  • Little purse

  • Bouquet

  • Perfume

  • Lipstick

  • Something old, new, borrowed, blue

GROOM:

  • Suit

  • Tie/ Bowtie

  • Handkerchief

  • Tie Clip

  • Cufflinks

  • Watch

  • Shoes

  • Belt/Suspenders

  • Boutonniere

  • Cologne

ADDITIONAL:

  • Vow books

  • Wedding Stationary - Invitations, Save the Dates, Wedding Program, etc.

  • Special ring boxes or jewelry dishes

  • Handwritten notes to each other

  • Photos of you!

  • Scraps of fabric or ribbon

  • Loose florals

  • Custom etched champagne glasses

  • Custom cocktail napkins

  • Wedding favors

Larger items like your dress, shoes, and bouquet won't fit into a box, so just keep them close by!

TIP #2 PERSONALIZED TOUCHES & HEIRLOOMS

If you have any custom items such as embroidered cuffs, your grandmother's pearl necklace, or ceremonial items please let me know so I can be sure to pay special attention to these details. And include these in your detail box!

TIP #3 ASK YOUR FLORIST FOR LOOSE FLORALS & GREENERY

Ask for a few loose flowers or greenery that match your floral scheme. These are a great addition to your detail shots and help tie in your wedding colors.

TIP #4 HAVE A NICE WEDDING DRESS HANGER

I mentioned this above but do not underestimate the difference between having a NICE wedding dress hanger vs. a cheap plastic one. It really has a huge impact on your dress photos. I recommend a nice wooden light brown or white hanger, but you can also look into satin or clear acrylic. Also be sure to test it before, to make sure your dress will securely hang on it and doesn't fall off.

TIP #5 MAKE A LIST

Make a list of all the items you have in your detail box/ want included in your shots. This ensures that no items are accidentally missed. You can put this list in your box and share it with your Maid of Honor so she's aware. If you are super detailed oriented you can make a list of item combinations, but if you don't have a preference, don't worry, I've got you covered.

I hope you found this detail photography guide helpful! What do you think, did I miss anything? Let me know in the comments!
